Steps of faith

Make a "why God" list

 Make a “why God?” list

List five things that make it hard for you to believe in God. Then five that make it easier.

How do the two lists compare? Which came quicker? How easy do you find it to believe in God? Some people find it much easier than others to believe in God.

There are the big questions: How could a good God allow such suffering? Where does love come from if there is no God? How can the universe have happened if it was not created? Does science leave any room for God? Why do ripe peaches taste so good? Can there be any real right and wrong if the universe is accidental?

Personal experience also makes a lot of difference. Some people have powerful ongoing experiences of God, others don’t. Some people are brought up within happy religious families and enjoyable churches, with good Christian friends; others have unhappy and damaging experience of religion; others still have had little contact with it either way.

Some people can’t imagine how anyone could not believe in God. Some can’t understand how anybody could. Most of us fall somewhere between the two.

Look at your lists of reasons “for” and “against” God. Ask yourself not just what you think about these reasons, but also what you feel. Which of these reasons matters the most to you – and why? Explore what has happened in your life to shape your views about God.

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
C.S. Lewis
